In The Old Days

October 15, 2008

Here's an introduction to some of my Favourite Early Albums. Maybe some of these hit the spot for you too!
These first albums I found in my father's records when I was about 8! I listened to them ALL the time..my earliest influences - Johnny Cash & Ray Charles country!

The Sweetheart of the Rodeo album with Gram Parsons really opened up my world as a kid.

i loved danny Kortchmar's guitar work on this as well!

I had to include this album for peter rowan's fantastic writing and singing...and for vassar clement's untouchable fiddle playing...unbelievable!

A great first album by Iain Matthews, whose work is worth gold. All power to him! Check the absolutely gorgeous "If you saw thru' my eyes" with Sandy Denny on his second album.

How I learned to Play
I found an old radio in our shed.

I hooked it up to an even older turntable from the 40s I found and that's what I used to play my records on. I also fixed an input jack connection into the valve works in the back of the radio set and spent hours playing along to this album in particular, Clarence white's B-string bender!

The sound of that and McGuin's 12 string jangle, along with Everybody Knows this is Nowhere, formed the basis of my learning.

This was my guitar - a Gretsch Anniversary model. Beautiful. I had a Mosrite solid body after this which could really roar.
